The registration process

Four steps to registering an imported car

1

Originality inspection

Verification of the vehicle identifiers (VIN, plates) and documents at the originality check station.

2

Technical and emissions inspection

If the traffic inspectorate requires it — especially for a vehicle without a valid inspection from the country of origin.

3

Compulsory motor liability insurance

You take out compulsory motor liability insurance (PZP) before registration — without it the vehicle will not be entered in the register.

4

Registration at the traffic inspectorate

The fee according to the calculator is paid, and the registration certificate and number plates are issued.

FAQ

How much does registering an imported car cost in 2026?

The administrative fee is calculated as the rate based on engine power (33 € to 1 000 €) multiplied by the vehicle's ecological coefficient (0,10 to 1,00), but at least 33 €. For example, a diesel with 140 kW and Euro 6d: 300 € × 0,40 = 120 €. The calculator above works it out for you.

Is a transfer fee also payable on import?

In Slovakia it is one and the same fee: registration of the vehicle holder in the vehicle register (Act No. 145/1995 Coll., fee schedule, item 65). It is paid both on the first registration of an imported car and on every transfer to a new holder — nothing extra is added.

How much does registering or transferring an electric car cost?

For a vehicle powered solely by electricity, the fee is a flat 33 € regardless of power. A plug-in hybrid pays the power-based rate × 0,20.

How is the ecological coefficient determined?

By fuel type (item 18 of the registration certificate part II) and Euro emission standard: from 0,40 for Euro 6d to 1,00 for Euro 1. Plug-in hybrids and hydrogen cars have 0,20, vehicles older than 40 years 0,10. If the emission standard cannot be determined, the date of first registration decides.

Who is exempt from the fee or pays less?

Registration of the holder is exempt in the case of inheritance, on the basis of an official order or court decision and on the dissolution of spouses' joint property, and if an allowance for a person with a severe disability was provided for the purchase of the car. Holders of a ŤZP / ŤZP-S card pay half; a family entitled to child benefit for at least four children pays half for an M1 car with at least six seats and power up to 110 kW, but no more than 33 €.

Is Slovak VAT payable when importing a used car?

For a used car bought from an EU dealer under the special scheme (margin taxation), Slovak VAT usually does not arise. However, a car younger than six months or with up to 6 000 km is considered a new means of transport and VAT is payable on it in Slovakia.

Turnkey import and registration

We find the car, check it, import it from Germany and hand it over with a Slovak registration certificate in your name.
