Buying a used premium car — 10-point checklist
Before you buy a used premium car, go through these 10 points. They will help you filter out hidden faults and bad buys.
In brief
Buying a used car is a good decision if you check thoroughly. The most important points: a documented service history, a genuine odometer reading, originality, technical condition and the total on-the-road costs. This 10-point list guides you through the whole process — and with premium cars thoroughness pays off especially, because repairing hidden defects is expensive. CarAdvance inspects every imported car on site before you buy it.
A good used premium car can be a fantastic buy — but a bad one costs dearly. The difference lies in thoroughness. With the following 10-point checklist you can filter out the most common pitfalls, whether you are buying in Slovakia or importing from Germany.
The 10-point checklist
- Service history. Ask for the service book and invoices. Complete maintenance at an authorised dealer is the foundation of reliability.
- Genuine mileage. Compare the service entries, the technical inspection records and the car's general wear (steering wheel, seats, pedals).
- Originality. Check the VIN and the papers; for imports, the originality inspection is a mandatory step.
- Accident history. Find out whether there has been a serious accident — paint thickness and panel gaps reveal a lot.
- Engine and gearbox. Cold start, smooth idling, smoke, smooth gear changes — pay attention during the test drive.
- Suspension and brakes. Noises, vibration, uneven braking — these can be costly items.
- Electronics and extras. Try every function; premium extras (air suspension, reversing camera, matrix lights) are expensive to repair.
- Tyre and brake condition. Wear can mean an immediate extra expense on top of the purchase price.
- Orderly paperwork. Incomplete or disorganised documentation is a serious headache during registration and transfer of ownership.
- Total cost. Do not look at the purchase price alone — factor in transport, taxes, registration and any immediate servicing.
The most expensive mistake: looking only at the price
Most bad buying decisions come from someone choosing the cheapest listing and not checking the condition. An independent expert inspection on site pays for itself many times over — especially with premium cars, where repairing a hidden defect can run to a very large sum.
Why is importing with us safer?
The German market offers a wider selection and better documentation, but it is hard to judge a car's real condition from a distance. That is why on-site inspection is crucial when importing. We describe the whole process in our car import from Germany guide, and for a specific model, see our BMW X5 import article.

FAQ
Is it worth buying a used premium car instead of a new one?
Often yes: the biggest depreciation has already happened, so you get better value for money — provided the condition is right. That is why a thorough inspection is key.
How do I check the real mileage?
The service entries, the technical inspection data and the car's wear together give you the picture. For imports, German records help too — we check this for you.
Can I get a warranty on a used car?
Typically yes for a car bought from a dealer; less often from a private seller. The details are always set out in the specific purchase.
Can a used car be financed?
Yes, including by leasing. Use the leasing calculator, or read our car leasing guide.
